Infrastructure Engineer - Stevenage

We are looking for an Infrastructure Engineer with hands‑on experience running and modernising enterprise platforms across Azure and on‑premises environments. Strong in migrations, legacy integration, identity, networking, DevOps pipelines, and resilient infrastructure.

Responsibilities include:

  • Build and operate hybrid Azure and on‑prem infrastructure
  • Understand end‑to‑end service and data flows
  • Modernise and migrate legacy platforms securely
  • Integrate cloud and legacy systems via APIs and middleware
  • Support and integrate DevOps CI/CD pipelines with hybrid platforms
  • Deliver data migrations and basic ETL
  • Execute compute, virtualisation, and storage migrations with low or zero downtime
  • Engineer enterprise storage and capacity solutions
  • Secure hybrid networks using Zero Trust principles
  • Drive automation and configuration consistency
  • Support hybrid identity with Active Directory and Microsoft Identity
  • Design and operate disaster recovery and backup solutions

Job Title Infrastructure Engineer
(Primary Focus: Infrastructure & Network / Cloud & Automation / Security)
Reporting to IT Infrastructure & Security Manager
Environment This role sits within the IT Department and reports to the IT Infrastructure & Security Manager. The Infrastructure Engineer plays a key role in supporting and evolving The Wine Society’s technology platform across infrastructure, cloud services, and security.

The role operates within a collaborative engineering team where each engineer has a primary focus area but works across the wider platform to ensure resilience, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement.

The role is based in Stevenage with some remote working available.

This is a full-time role of 37.5 hours per week.

Job purpose The Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for maintaining, improving, and securing The Wine Society’s technology platform.

This hands-on engineering role involves working across infrastructure, networking, cloud platforms, and security technologies to ensure systems are reliable, secure, and well managed.

Infrastructure Engineers collaborate closely with service teams, developers, suppliers, and business stakeholders to deliver technology improvements, resolve complex technical issues, and ensure new systems are implemented securely and effectively.

While each engineer will have a primary area of expertise, all team members are expected to contribute across the full platform and support one another, ensuring there are no single points of failure and knowledge is shared across the team.

Accountability
  • Accountable for supporting the stability, security, and continuous improvement of the organisation’s core technology platforms.
  • Ensure infrastructure, cloud services, and security tooling are maintained in line with operational standards and best practices.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of infrastructure, platform, and security improvements.
  • Support the investigation and resolution of complex incidents and problems affecting the technology platform.
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and third-party suppliers to maintain reliable and secure services.
  • Contribute to strengthening The Wine Society’s overall technology resilience and cybersecurity maturity.
Principal duties and responsibilities
  • Provide third-line technical support for complex infrastructure, cloud, and security issues.
  • Maintain and support core IT platforms including servers, networks, cloud environments, identity systems, and security tooling.
  • Monitor system performance, reliability, and availability, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
  • Support patching, configuration management, and system hardening activities.
  • Assist with the design and implementation of infrastructure and cloud improvements.
  • Contribute to infrastructure automation and platform modernisation initiatives.
  • Provide technical input into IT projects and architecture decisions.
  • Work with third-party suppliers to troubleshoot issues and improve service delivery.
  • Support vulnerability remediation and security improvements across infrastructure and applications.
  • Assist with incident response activities and post-incident reviews.
  • Ensure systems are implemented and maintained in line with security standards and best practices.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, standards, and operational procedures.
  • Contribute to knowledge sharing and cross-training within the platform engineering team.
  • Participate in the development of operational runbooks and platform documentation.
  • Support supplier reviews, technical governance, and platform lifecycle management.

Primary Focus Area

Each Senior Infrastructure Engineer will have a primary area of expertise while continuing to work across the wider technology platform.

Infrastructure Focus: Lead on server infrastructure, connectivity, virtualisation platforms, backup and disaster recovery systems, and on-premise infrastructure.

Cloud & Automation Focus: Lead on Azure platform engineering, infrastructure-as-code, automation, monitoring, and cloud platform optimisation.

Security Focus: Lead on vulnerability management, security tooling, threat detection, and security architecture improvements aligned to frameworks such as NIST.

Requirements Essential Desirable
Educational attainment Degree in IT, Computer Science, Cyber Security, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge required Strong understanding of infrastructure platforms including servers, networking, and operating systems.

Understanding of cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure.

Knowledge of core security principles and common attack vectors.

Understanding of monitoring, patching, and system lifecycle management.

Familiarity with security frameworks such as NIST, CIS Controls, or Cyber Essentials.
Experience required Worked in infrastructure engineering, platform engineering, or cloud engineering roles.

Supported complex enterprise systems and infrastructure.

Worked with third-party suppliers and managed services providers.

Supported incident investigation and root cause analysis.

Delivered technical improvements or infrastructure projects.

Experience with monitoring, observability, or performance management tools.

Experience with infrastructure automation or Infrastructure-as-Code.

Experience with vulnerability management or security tooling.

Experience working with Microsoft cloud technologies including Azure and Microsoft security platforms.
