Cellar Supervisor - Tenterden

Chapel Down, England’s leading wine producer, is seeking an experienced Cellar Supervisor to join our dynamic winemaking team to play a pivotal role in shaping our future success. This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with our Winemaker in the delivery of our mission to “change the way the world thinks about English wine.”

You will manage and oversee a small, dedicated team and help guide them towards achieving our ambitious growth targets.

About You

Reporting to the Winemaker, the Cellar Supervisor’s primary responsibility is to ensure that our wines are made to world class quality standards from pressing through to bottling. This involves meticulous attention to detail and an understanding of wine science. You will be responsible for the creation and implementation of work plans to produce a range of traditional method, still and carbonated wines. Supervision and training of staff is essential with a hands-on approach and leading by example to get the best from the team.

Quality, leadership and safety are key elements of this role.

Quality:

 

  • Production of super-premium, consistently high-quality wines.
  • Under the guidance of the Winemaker, ensure all steps are followed to maximise quality and mitigate any risks of product non-compliance.
  • Liaise with the Winemaker and Assistant Winemaker to implement our SALSA accreditation plan.
  • Continually analyse and improve processes in our pursuit of quality. 

Leadership:

  • Motivate and create a positive team culture.
  • Implement training programmes and ensure all cellar SOPs are adhered to.  

Operational Health and Safety co-ordination:

  • Responsible for developing and implementing risk assessments for cellar work alongside Winemaker and leading a H&S focussed style of work in the winery.  

Record keeping:

  • Accurately document all winemaking to ensure full product traceability and loss control, including goods-in procedures and monthly stock take.  

 ​

Machinery maintenance:

  • Responsible for maintenance of all winery equipment. To include basic fault-finding, liaising with contractors and recording/scheduling of all maintenance works.


    Essential skills and experience:

    • Proven experience in a winery setting, ideally within a larger winery with a good understanding of the winemaking process
    • Ability to lead and train winery teams and delegate effectively
    • Familiarity and understanding of mechanical and/or pneumatic engineering
    • Strong knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety requirements
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Self-sufficient with the ability to solve problems without close supervision  ​

    Desirable but not essential:

    • Tertiary qualification in Oenology (BSc, DNO or post-grad equivalent)
    • Forklift Licence
    • Experience in conducting basic wine analysis
